Enduring & Endearing

Hello to all out there in the net world, my computer crashed, so I'm borrowing one to make a post.

I received a DOGFANCY magazine in the mail today and guess what dog was on the front cover... An American Staffordshire Terrier. Yes, that's right... an AmStaff. Wahoo! J The centerfold is of 4 very beautiful AmStaffs and there are several full page photos of more AmStaffs. The article is a positive article, but yet it breaks it down to the truth. It states, the loyal, confident American Staffordshire Terrier needs a responsible, experienced owner. I agree, not just anyone should own a dog like this. It takes a more responsible dog owner than just the average. If you decide that you would like to own one, you need to ask yourself, are you responsible enough, are you able to take your dog out to be socialized and trained while (s)he is a puppy and an adult, and can you be bull-headed just like your AmStaff can be? Socialization is a major key to having a well tempered dog. If you believe you are willing, responsible, and strong enough to take on the responsibility of a dog like this, then so be it, you will have a loving companion as long as you raise her/him responsibly in a loving home. But from my own experiences, be prepared to be harassed, ridiculed, and shunned when you take your dog into public places such as parks, pet stores, etc. The media is the culprit for this. I take my Storm out to places, just to prove the media wrong and to help educate others on the ignorance of BSL.

Excellent post Andee. One other thing that should be mentioned, is to know what you are getting into prior to getting a pitty in the first place. DO YOUR HOMEWORK THOROUGHLY! Leash free parks are not a place for pitties. Not that your pitty is agressive, but because if an aggressive dog did go after your dog, your dog will only take so much and then it is probably going to say, 'ENOUGH'! Course, if your dog wins, they (the general pulic and media will not view that your dog didn't act out). Headlines will say another Pit bull attack. Chances are, your dog will win, which will make it even worse.
And one more thing, proper training is very important. Pitties are people pleasers, so your new pup can so easily go to the head of the class...but proper training, especially to a novice is well adviced.
