Gentle Lead

Well, due to the fact that while my mom was walking Storm, Storm took off after a squirrel and caused my mom to step in a hole, fall, and break her ankle in 3 places. Storm didn't mean to and my mom wasn't mad at all. But now that she can "sort of" walk now, she wanted something to help her with Storm. So we purchased a gentle leader. I've been walking Storm around with it and it really seems to work. Although, Storm doesn't like it too much, she's getting use to it. Even today at lunch time, a rascally squirrel jumped around in the back yard. Storm started that way and soon stood still. I was amazed. The only other time she was listening that well was when she had her prong collar on. The only thing is... I know it's not a muzzle, but it kind of looks like one. I don't want people to think she's aggressive, because she's not by no means. The other alternative I have for her out in public is the prong collar. And we all know what those look like.... some type of medieval torture device, although when used correctly they work miracles too. I personally recommend either, but the most important thing is to USE THEM CORRECTLY, or you could seriously injure your pooch! We wouldn't want that to happen!

LOL That's what I got for Shasta after my first fall off my bike and cracked my skull...that and a helmet. But since she associates the halti (gentle leader) with going outside, she totally LOVES it now and I have full control and never wore my helmet again.
I was also hopeing that if she could get used to that, getting used to a muzzle might be easier, but the two, although look simular, in any way give her the same freedom, so she HATES the muzzle.
We hoped they would allow us the gentle leaders rather than the muzzles, but they said NO! *sigh*
The gentle leader to me is the best way of training there is. After a while, she will learn not to run after things even without it on.
Ohhhh Storm! You still totally look BEAUTIFUL!!! Throw her some treats with it on and she's soon see she isn't restricted and give her a lot of praise!!!

By the way...visit my blog, there's a surprise for you there!

Hi Kitty,
Maybe during the day for a couple of days, put the leader on your pooch without putting the leash and let her wear it around. Give her plenty of treats & positive reinforcement when she's not pawing at it. Then after a day or so take her out with the leash attached to her normal collar while she's wearing the leader. Again giving her treats. Then eventually just use the leader.

Whatever you do, don't jerk the leash while it's attached to the leader!!!! Just hold it and she'll realize that she can't go any further. We now walk Storm on the flexi-leash with the leader and she does great. If she gets anxious & wants to take off, I put the breaks on the leash so that she doesn't take off running & hurt herself.

I was actually amazed at how well Storm responded to it... when she's outside she' ok with it, but as soon as she's back in, she wants it off!

But I think treats and praising, lots & lots of good praising, will help... maybe!?! Let me know!!
