The stupidity of bsl...
As I was reading Conners' page on the Ontario Pit bull ban; my feathers got ruffled and Storm's hackles stood up. In the Frequently Asked Questions section, first of all, I was relieved to know that just because this law comes into effect, the existing pitties do not have to be euthanized as they have been required to do in some states in the U.S.A.... (Colorado, Ohio). But as I kept reading, I became more & more disturbed. It then states "as long as they are kept in compliance with the law". Hmmm???
Next, basically anything that looks like, smells like, woof's like, sniffs like, licks like, feels like, poops like, (ok, maybe I'm going a little over-board) or has any similar characteristics of a pit bull is deemed a pit bull. The owner will have to have proof that it has no pit mixed in its blood. How the heck is the owner going to do that??????? If there are no AKC, CKC, UKC, etc. papers to prove who the dame & sire are, it's hopeless. Geesh!
This leads to the law of traveling with a pit. When flying with your dog somewhere, I believe airlines require documentation on the dog stating all the vaccinations are up to date. But this Ontario law doesn't care about documentation. If I were to visit Conners & Shasta in Ontario, I wouldn't be able to bring my amstaff, Storm to visit them for fear of losing her forever. Because my "pit bull" would be subject to seizure & I would be fined or jailed. Or if I'm driving through some of the states (Colorado, Ohio) and get pulled over, the cop could just take my precious Storm away & put her down, right then & there. They could do this because it is in violation to the law to import a pit bull after the law takes effect. The only exception that I could take Storm there would be.... a "recognized" dog show, I guess like the AKC dog show or the type of shows that are shown on Animal planet.
For the lucky, (but yet in a way, poor souls because of the torture), that get to keep their pitties, their dogs will have to wear a muzzle. Duh.... a muzzle makes any dog look much more vicious than not wearing one. I don't agree with this, but I do agree with the leash law.... because this keeps ALL dogs in control to an extent. Even those that are not pit bulls but yet they are aggressive and THEY don't have to wear a muzzle. Also, the existing pits must be spayed or neutered. I tend to agree with this part of the law too, all of my dogs are spayed. There are too many pits in need of rescue out in the world and we don't need to make it any worse for them.
Even after all of this crap that a responsible owner has to put up with, all it takes is for one person to call the Animal Control and make a complaint. And *poof*, in a flash there goes another loved family pet bull to be put down or experimented on.
Lastly, for example if my state had a ban in place stating that only existing pit bulls were allowed to stay (as the Ontario ban), but later on, my county decided to ban ALL pit bulls, the law states that the more restrictive provisions will prevail.
Go figure...

i think the ban is for residents... travellers w/ animals prolly are exempt because the dog is not a illegal resident.... he is just passing thru. maybe they will give them puppy green cards for travelling. I would say if u have doc's from your vet as to the native home of the dog... should be no problemo' my two cents...
Out...
worst thing they could do is make you leave immediately w/ your doggy.
I got pulled here for speeding a few months ago & Storm, sitting in the back seat, barked (no growling) like crazy at the cop when he walked up because she was trying to protect me. If that cop had been in a "banned" state, he would probably have taken her & deemed her vicious.
Needless to say, I really don't want to take that chance of losing her. She's my wittle pride & joy!
No excemption in Ontario. Andee is right! Storm would be taken from her and...well, forget the and becuz it's too unbaroble to think about...and YES...Andee would not be staying at my place, but would have free room and board in jail fo up to 6 months and/or fined up to $10,000.
On an up note...that would be Canadian dollars rather than American.
