PetSmart Doggie Day Camp

I remember reading this on someone's blog or either hearing about it, I can't remember... I'm banking it was on a pitbull friendly blog.... but now it's my time to fuss...

Storm and I went to Petsmart yesterday, riding with the top down, Storm with her doggles on. Adorable as ever, getting friendly comments at every stop light. But today as I was redeeming my coupon online to get my $5.00 gift card that I so much deserve for buying expensively, overpriced dog food, I came across the doggie day care link (above in title). I thought hmmm, let's look into it. Well as it is, the PetSmart close to my town, doesn't offer the day camp. But guess what some of the rules are of dogs that cannot attend... taken directly from the petsmart webpage...

Who may not attend?

  • Intact (unneutered) male dogs or pregnant females
  • Dogs with any aggressive tendencies regardless of breed
  • Dogs in the "bully breed" classification (e.g. Pit Bull Terriers, American Pit Bull Terriers, American Staffordshire Terriers, Staffordshire Bull Terriers, American Bull Dogs or mixed breeds that have the appearance or characteristics of one of these breeds)
  • Wolves/wolf hybrids

Let me just say this, I've proudly been to petsmart MANY times with my AMERICAN STAFFORDSHIRE TERRIER a.k.a PIT BULL TERRIER, and she has been more obedient, quiet, and non aggressive than many of the breeds that are "allowed". It happens every time, there is always some little yapper, yapping and snipping at another dog and people are laughing and saying oh how cute. If that had been Storm, even barking, we would probably be kicked out. Even some of the bigger dogs, such as the Collies & Labs that I see there sometimes and the Australian Shephards that was there yesterday (Don't get me wrong, I'm not picking on a particular breed, unlike some people do, I'm just emphasizing these dogs, in particular) were acting in an un-socialized manner.

So why is this? My Storm is very well behaved, yet because of her breed, she is exempt from being allowed to go to doggie camp. She is not aggressive. When we go into petsmart, most of the workers there always come up to her. She's always giving away my kisses to them. They always comment on how well behaved she is. So why is it that petsmart has to discriminate against a certain breed? Isn't petsmart supposed to be a dog friendly place??? All dogs??? I am completely disappointed in petsmart. Why couldn't petsmart leave it at that... dogs with aggressive tendencies? Why did they have to go on and specify the "bully breed"? Doesn't petsmart realize that there are MANY more dogs classified in the bully breed such as english bulldogs, boxers, frenchies, bull terriers, and boston terriers. Check out this link...

Well Petsmart, you can take your foo-foo doggie day camp and shove it. Because you don't deserve to have my money, nor my dog to enlighten you with her charming, loveable, and captivating personality. You don't even deserve to have the boston terriers that we have, to visit your camp. I didn't know that you fell into the same narrow-minded pool as those ignorant people that think that all apples in a barrel are bad, just because of a few bad apples.

Sigh.....When will people learn?? Ban the deed...not the breed!! It DOES NOT work. Hugs to Storm. Tell her there are MUCH better places to play than Petsmart doggie daycare!!

We've been discriminated with Petsmart ever since the ban here in Ontario. Prior to that, we wee always getting such a positive reaction from staff and other dog owners. So how come the staff's opinion stopped being positive once the banned was enforced?
I spent so much at Petsmart, but no more. Why would I fratinize a pet store that discriminates against my pet? NO WAY! They've been rude and a manager referred to them as 'Those dogs!' They won't even clip nails as well as groom them anymore.
But to actually put it up on-line and discriminate for all to see... we thought it was only us here in Ontario, but obviously it's policy.

My mommy always says there are no bad dogs just bad owners. I agree with my mom!

When I was a pup people always thought I was a pit and my parents almost got a pit....well that was before I kissed my daddy and they fell in love with me.

I can only agree with cario the boxer, dogs are actually what to make them to be, the reason there are bad dogs, is because the owner is bad!

However I must admit I harbor a prejudice agaisnt pit bulls, that's kind a harsh, but I've read so many urban myths about this breed, but i'm glad i've found your site and I intend to do some research on them , who knows, I might be reawakened to a new perspective. Anyway keep up the good work, I really love the site, I guess it is because I am a dog lover too!

I'm shocked and very upset! We should wage war on the Petsmart and flood them with emails. I will personally be sending them one. What gives them the right to decide something like that. Andee I'm very sorry they don't understand, give Storm kisses from us!!

It really bothered me to read that on Petsmart's website. It's supposed to be a place "for dogs"... I would think that meant any dog.

Sally,
Keep your mind open when it comes to the breed. Look at the "I Sorry" link and it shows many beloved pitties showing their love. Now, yes there are some bad ones out there, but I (along with many others) firmly believe that it is in the raising of the dogs. You can make a lasa apso (sp?) mean, just as easily as a pit. You can also make a pit sweet and loveable just as easily as you can make a boxer loveable. Raising and socialization!!!
